A Place of Safety

In 1973, Diana Lees was the social worker blamed for the death of 7-year old Maria Colwell. The subsequent public inquiry, the apologies, the promises and a raft of reforms established the template for the managing of child abuse scandals.

Now it is 2003, and with the Victoria Climbie inquiry is at its height, Diana is ready to reflect on her actions.  It is time for debate and explanation, ghosts and remembrances.

A Place of Safety is an exploration of the personal cost to those involved in child protection.

A reading of the play took place on Saturday (4th September) as part of the In Process/In Performance season at the Brighton Dome and Festival.  It was a great day with the actors engaging with the text, interrogating the intention and then giving brilliant performances.  Thanks to all who attended.
