My friend is a sculptor

My friend is a sculptor.  He splits wood, burns wood, carves wood, chars wood, pours molten aluminium into its cracks and crevices.  He is demanding that the material bend to his will, works on his behalf, sacrifice itself to his Art.

I am a writer and it made me think about the importance of respectfully engaging with the material: the characters and the form...to build a relationship where there is a committment to work on behalf of the piece; to make the sacrifice gladly.
